TPE solutions for seatbelt
tensioners.

One of our clients in the automotive market was using Thermoplastic Vulcanizate (TPV) compounds in seatbelt tensioners. However, the TPV compounds they were using had issues related to cost, appearance, and performance. The suppliers of this material were unable to meet the required color specifications, which posed an additional problem for the client, as it impacted the financial results of this product line.

For this reason, the client turned to Alphagary Compounds and requested the development of a solution using TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) compounds that would meet the cost and performance requirements, along with the following improvements:

  • Cost savings compared to TPV compound
  • Shorter lead time

Problem

The client was experiencing color inconsistencies when using TPV, making it difficult to maintain color stability in the parts processed through injection molding.

Challenges

At Alphagary Compounds, we offered the client the development of a TPE compound to replace the TPV products they were using.

The new TPE compound offers several advantages. On one hand, it extends the processing window; on the other, it reduces cycle times and is 100% recyclable.

Además, el TPE tiene un color natural consistente, por lo que el cliente puede añadirle los pigmentos deseados a la hora de hacer el moldeo por inyección. Esto disminuye el tiempo para desarrollar colores personalizados y los costos que esto conlleva. Finalmente, nuestro compuesto al ser no higroscópico, no necesita tiempo de secado.

Solution

The new TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) compound, EVOPRENE TS 7082, met all the client’s needs and fulfilled their performance objectives. The TPE compound, when carefully processed, offers an improved surface appearance and a consistent natural color.

Además, redujo el tiempo del ciclo y cumplió con los requerimientos de precio del cliente. El compuesto TPE obtuvo la aprobación tanto de Chrysler como de Ford. una mejor apariencia en su superficie y un color natural consistente.

Results

The greatest advantage gained was that the client received a TPE compound tailored to their specific needs. In addition, our compound delivered better performance, shorter cycle times, and, since it is non-hygroscopic, it significantly contributes to saving time in the production process.

Finalmente, elimina la necesidad de la participación de un tercer proveedor para la consecución del color deseado, por lo que se economiza tiempo y dinero.
